Joan Pamboukes

Joan Pamboukes received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and her MFA from New Jersey City University. Joan’s photography and video has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the New York City metropolitan area, including Galapagos Art Space, Chashama UpTown, The Arts Council of Princeton, City Without Walls and The Jersey City Museum. Joan teaches photography and media arts at The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Long Island University in Brooklyn, and New Jersey City University.

This workshop focuses on one of Photoshop®’s most powerful advantages: Selections! Learn more about the basic selection tools starting with the lasso, marquee, magnetic and magic selections. Then focus on creating paths and editing masks in depth. Students will learn how to create seamless transitions and refine their compositing skills. Prerequisite: Photoshop® I or faculty review.

The Beauty of Photograms

A photogram is an image made without using a camera, by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material and then exposing it to light. Artists such as László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray and even Pablo Picasso have experimented with this intuitive and magical process! Learn to create beautifully luminous and abstract images in the B&W darkroom and “capture an unseen space.” All materials included.

Personal Digital Projects

This course is ideal for any student who wants to focus on a photographic, design or fine art project, whether complex or simple. Past students have worked on building a portfolio, publishing a photo book online, preparing artwork for an exhibition, creating slide shows, or even just refining their Photoshop® skills. Limited to 5 students to ensure personalized attention. This class is co-taught by Joan and Peter for extra individual attention.

Introduction to Digital Photography
INSTRUCTOR: Pamboukes

10 WEEK CLASS
This course is designed for students who want to learn about their digital point-and-shoot or SLR camera system. Topics include basic camera operation: shutter, aperture, focal length, white balance and metering. Students will learn to adjust raw images, and make basic adjustments using Adobe Photoshop® CS4. Students will also learn how to scan and make photo-quality prints on our fine art inkjet printers. Simple composition, presentation and lighting strategies will be addressed. Shooting assignments will be given. Students should bring their own digital camera, a tripod if possible, and the camera manual to the first class.

Digital Photography II
INSTRUCTOR: Pamboukes

10 WEEK CLASS
Students will refine their aesthetic, creative and technical digital photography skills. Topics will include image critiques, tonal separation and color balance, refining workflow and enhancing drama within the digital composition. This course will help build confidence when using the digital camera and digital workstation. Prerequisite: Digital Photography I.
