![]() SEPTEMBER 11, 2009 First Look 2010 Emering Artist Series New Tales for Our Age September 11 - November 27, 2009 Opening Reception: Friday, September 11, 6-8pm
This exhibition examines the potential and relevance of narrative in contemporary art. Eun-Ha Paek and Roxanne Wolaneczyk use animation and digital technology to invent new “fairy tales” that narrate the experiences of contemporary women. Aliza Augustine and Michelle Provenzano create evocative images with their invented characters, inviting multiple possibilities of narrative interpretation. Yukiko Nakashima encapsulates both the cute and creepy aspects of childhood memory and imagination through interrelated works in painting, sculpture, and performance. Both Alexis Duque and Gaku Shinohara concoct fantasy worlds inspired by experiences and ideas born out of urban life. Alexander Kukai Shinohara and Kevin Darmanie weave autobiographical narratives into drawings and paintings recalling the bold styles of graffiti and graphic novels. Last but not least, Ravikumar Kashi, an artist currently working in India, presents handmade books encased in plaster, which challenge traditional notions of how paper, books, and the texts found within them should function. The works of these featured artists demonstrate the relevance of storytelling as a means of making sense of our age. The exhibition aims to inspire discovery of the universality of human experiences within the stories constructed by both artists and audience, emphasizing that we are never alone in coping with life’s challenges.
