Encaustic for Beginners

Encaustic is a centuries old method of painting with molten beeswax or wax and pure pigment, resulting in luscious, vibrant colors. Working in charcoal, pastel or acrylic, students will learn how to accurately and expressively depict a variety of fabric types including satin, lace, cotton, fringe and patterned cloths. Gestural studies focusing on form and value will be done in charcoal to gain a feeling for the way each type of cloth hangs and flows, ensuring a sense of expression and spontaneity. Creative Surfaces for the Digital Artist
INSTRUCTOR: Kuehn

Create your own custom surfaces for digital printing using specialized inkjet receptive coatings called digital grounds. Just introduced, Golden Paints® has a line of new products for you. In this workshop you will learn how to coat, tint and texturize assorted papers as well as nonporous surfaces. These products allow you to explore a variety of materials from delicate rice papers to spun polyester and digital transfers. The class includes preparation of surfaces, creating digital transfers and a demonstration on how to properly handle and print using an inkjet printer. Discussion will also include compatibility of mixed media with these coatings. Drying times will vary; therefore, prepared materials will be taken home for printing.

Encaustic: Beyond the Basics

This intermediate workshop is for students who are already comfortable working with wax. Students are encouraged to bring works in progress and specific project ideas for discussion. Individual students will receive personal attention from the instructor, learn new techniques and go beyond the basics. This workshop will also include an informal critique and discussion. Intro to Precious Metal Clay
INSTRUCTOR: Harrison

Precious Metal Clay is made of tiny fine silver particles mixed with a binder to form a clay like consistency. It can be manipulated and formed just like clay. It is then fired in a kiln, where the binder burns away, leaving a piece of hard, 99.9% fine silver. In this workshop, you will learn how to shape, texture and carve metal clay using simple tools. Demonstration and discussion for beginner level project. All materials provided.

Animal Portraiture

Students will be able to work in any medium they desire, as they receive individual attention. Demonstrations about the structure and anatomy of animals will be given, and textures such as fur and feathers will be addressed. The workshop will look at how to start a drawing loosely with gestures in charcoal and graphite, and explore nuances like the differences in drawing dog and cat noses by seeing the structure beneath the fur. Photographing the Classic Nude

Learn how to photograph the feminine form (classic nude) with Fine Art photographer Ellen Denuto whose self-portraits and images of women have been published and exhibited worldwide. Experimenting with Pigment Sticks
INSTRUCTOR: Pressman

Pigment sticks are oil paint combined with wax to hold together into a stick form. They can be used in a spontaneous way right on a surface without the need for brushes. Texture, drawing, layering, glazing and scraping are just some of the techniques that we will explore in this workshop. Mono-printing and some encaustic will be covered.
